Environ un mois après l’album Thriller, Steve Porcaro et Michael Jackson ont travaillé sur Chicago 1945. Steve Poracro a remis une cassette avec des instrus à Michael qui est allé dans une bibliothèque pour se renseigner sur les évènements qui avaient eu lieu à Chicago dans les années 40, afin d'y écrire une chanson. Elle commence avec des sirènes de police, Michael qui répète trois fois « Chicago » en claquant des mains, puis la musique démarre avec des synthétiseurs punchy, puissant et entraînant avec une petite touche de guitare funky. Néanmoins, dès le couplet commencé, les synthétiseurs se calment et un synthétiseur joue la basse avec une boîte à rythme . Dans le refrain, Michael répète « Chicago Nights » en fin de vers. La guitare funky de David Williams est également présent sur le morceau mais de façon assez discrète avec des cuivres sur le refain. Cela aurait même pu être le titre de la chanson. Les accords rappellent le titre It’s A Feeling de l’album Toto IV, paru en 1982.
